NOTES FROM THE FARM – JULY

Jul 5, 2023

So much to pick!

July brings with it an abundance of delicious produce here at the farm. Here’s what you can get your hands on right now, though do always check social media before you travel as we will update her first if we have to close a field or tunnel at short notice.

Gooseberries: These delightful fruits with their tangy and slightly sweet flavours are a true gem in the summer harvest. As you stroll through our gooseberry patch, you’ll be greeted by clusters of these green, pink tinged and red berries. Whether you plan to enjoy them fresh, turn them into pies, or transform them into tangy preserves, our gooseberries offer a delightful culinary adventure. Don’t miss the opportunity to pick these little green gems and savour their unique taste.

Silvan Blackberries: An earlier variety than your wild hedgerow blackberries, these are ripe and ready for picking now. These luscious, dark berries are bursting with sweetness, making them an irresistible treat for berry enthusiasts. Venture into our blackberry patch where you can pluck the ripest berries straight from the bushes – just watch out for thorns!

Courgettes: Thanks to that June heatwave our courgettes have thrived and are now ready to pick. These versatile vegetables can be used in various dishes, whether grilled, sautéed, or added to a refreshing summer salad. We’ll be posting lots of courgette recipes on social media this month so keep your eyes peeled!

Strawberries: Nothing says summer like the sweet taste of strawberries. Our strawberry tunnels are overflowing with ripe, red gems just waiting to be enjoyed. Whether you prefer them fresh, blended into a smoothie, or paired with cream, our strawberries offer a burst of sweetness that will leave you wanting more.

Raspberries: Every day, our raspberry bushes yield more fruit, and we’re excited to share their tangy goodness with you. Enjoy them in jams, pies, or simply fresh off the vine.

Globe Artichokes:  Whether steamed, grilled, or added to a hearty salad, the tender and earthy globes of artichokes are sure to elevate your meals. Pick up a recipe card in the farm shop for tips on how best to enjoy.

Blackcurrants and Redcurrants: Berry lovers, rejoice! It’s time to pick the plump clusters of blackcurrants and redcurrants at Rectory Farm. Bursting with rich flavors and essential nutrients, these berries are perfect for making jams, jellies, or incorporating into pies and tarts.

After a morning of picking and exploring, why not treat yourself to a tasty lunch in the cafe? And what better way to cool down on a sunny day than with our refreshing iced coffees (ask for a shot of flavoured syrup – yum!) and a delightful selection of gelatos?

For families with little adventurers, our farm boasts an exciting adventure playground where children can run, jump, and play to their hearts’ content. Don’t forget to fill up on fresh, cold milk from our convenient vending machine, sourced straight from North Cotswold Dairy’s herd.

As part of our commitment to sustainability, we kindly remind visitors to bring their own punnets for picking. Not only does this help us reduce plastic waste, but it also benefits you! By bringing your own containers, you’ll be eligible for a special discount on the weight of your pickings – just weigh and sticker your punnet on arrival at the weighing station next to the milk machine when you arrive.
