Notes from the Farm – August

Aug 14, 2023

It's harvest time!

August is in full swing at Rectory Farm PYO, and we’re thrilled to share the latest happenings straight from our fields. As the summer sun continues to grace us with its presence, our farm is abuzz with activity, combining the best of our harvest while navigating the ever-changeable weather. Let’s dive into what’s taking place on our grounds this month.

Harvesting Magic: The heart of August at Rectory Farm is all about harvesting some of our staple crops. We’re in the midst of combining wheat, beans, and barley, which involves long hours and late nights as we work tirelessly to bring in the bounty. It’s a dance with nature, as we coordinate with the unpredictable weather patterns to ensure the best quality produce is gathered.

Asparagus in Transition: Amidst the bustling activity of August, our asparagus plants are now in the ferning stage. This phase, known as ferning or “ferning out,” is a critical part of the asparagus lifecycle. During this process, the energy captured from the sun’s rays is channeled into the plant’s roots, preparing it for the next growing season. This period of photosynthesis and energy storage will ensure the vitality of the asparagus bed for the future. It’s a remarkable reminder of nature’s cycles and the intricate balance that sustains our farm.

Behind the Scenes: Curious about what goes on during our harvest? Be sure to check out our Instagram stories for an exclusive peek behind the scenes. We’re excited to share the journey of our crops from field to table, showcasing the dedication and hard work that goes into every single harvest.

Sweetcorn Delight: Calling all sweetcorn enthusiasts! Our golden sweetcorn is ripe and ready for picking. If you’ve never experienced the unmatched sweetness and crunchiness of freshly picked sweetcorn, now’s your chance. Unlike the offerings at supermarkets, our sweetcorn is a true treat for your taste buds. Remember to bring a bag and look for the cobs with brown fuzzy tops.

Sunflower Cheer: In early August, our sunflowers made a vibrant appearance, adding a splash of colour to our farm. While they were quickly picked by enthusiastic visitors, fear not! Our sunflower field will reopen as soon as the sun graces us with its presence once again. Keep an eye out for updates on when you can come and bask in the beauty of our sunflower field.

Berries Galore: Good news for berry lovers – both strawberries and raspberries are in abundant supply and prime for picking. Whether you’re looking to indulge in the sweetness of strawberries or the tanginess of raspberries, our fields are teeming with these delectable treats.

Nature’s Canvas: Our gladioli field is a masterpiece of colours waiting to be picked. With a variety of hues available, you can create your own bouquet at just 60p per stem. Bring secateurs or borrow a pair from the farm shop for a £2 returnable deposit,

Looking Ahead: While August keeps us busy, we’re also looking forward to some very exciting events in the coming months. Our pumpkin patch is thriving and will be ready for our much-anticipated Pumpkin Patch Event in October. Keep an eye out for ticket sales starting on Thursday 7th September.

Seasonal Plans: As we focus on the present harvest, we’re also making plans for the festive season. Our Christmas Fayre with Humble Country Events will take place in our flower tunnel on Friday, 1st, and Saturday, 2nd December. Stay tuned for more details about this merry event.

Gearing up for Christmas: Christmas is never too far from our thoughts. In the holiday season, we’ll be offering local Christmas trees, D’Oyley’s Farm free-range turkeys, and exquisite gift hampers that make for perfect presents. Stay tuned for more festive offerings.

As the summer holidays draw to a close, we invite you to come and savour the last few weeks of the season on our farm. Whether it’s the joy of picking your own produce, the beauty of sunflowers, a freshly prepared lunch or a pot of artisan gelato, there’s something for everyone to enjoy at Rectory Farm PYO.
