NOTES FROM THE FARM – APRIL

Apr 20, 2023

The farm is springing to life!

As we write this the sun is shining down on Stanton St. John and we are just about to announce opening dates for our PYO asparagus and rhubarb. We have a new asparagus buncher and we’re beginning to sell both asparagus and rhubarb in the farm shop while we monitor the fields; make sure you sign up to our newsletter to get updates on when the fields will open for picking!

Potato planting has finally started after all the winter prep work. Our first 2023 potatoes are due at the end of June and early July and first up will be our Maris Bard flaky new potatoes. We have been planting some new raspberries and more strawberries, and will be taking our first group of Little Friday Farmers for a tour of the strawberry tunnels this Friday 21st April to check on their progress.

Elsewhere on the farm we have cultivated our area in preparation for our sweetcorn and sunflowers, and ordered all our pumpkin seeds ready for The Pumpkin Patch in October. We have planted our beautiful pinks, gladioli and some other flowers for picking later in the year, and our dahlias are growing fast in the flower polytunnel already. So many incredible colours starting to pop!

Out the front of the farm shop we have created a new entrance way out of raised flower beds (all planted beautifully) to make entering and exiting the shop safer for everyone. Some very bright and branded bunting has arrived too and will be strung up very soon to give the whole front of the shop a very colourful feel. The milk vending machine continues to prove very popular and we have some new syrup flavours coming at the end of April for your DIY milkshakes…

The café is back in full swing, serving breakfasts and lunches daily from Tuesday to Sunday; why not make a date with a friend and pop in for a coffee, a pastry or something more substantial? Check out the current menu here. We will be serving Coronation Afternoon Tea on Friday 5th and Sunday 7th May, which will include a slice of asparagus quiche from our own fields: book your table here.

Our Mad Hatter’s Spring trail was great fun for all over the Easter holidays and we raised over £200 for RABI charity – thank you to everyone who kindly donated.
